The 8 is a weekly standup show where the same set of 5 comedians perform 10 minutes of standup comedy every Sunday for an entire year. This project is designed to give a space for comedians to grow their unique voice, through time, consistency, and discipline.
Every set will be recorded culminating in 8 hours of recorded stand up for each comedian. At the end of the project the 40 hours of comedy will be cut into a compilation album showcasing the evolution of these comedic voices. email:

Grant Lindahl is a cartoonist and talk show host of Art School Acid Dropout. This unique comedy talk show invites a surprise guest visual artist to spend 15min showcasing their visual work. Is it Marina Abramovic or Paul Pope? You will have to show up and see who this crazy savant tricks into showing up!

Then we invite 5 of New York’s top comedians to tell a story about anything their heART desires. Each comedian will be sketched by Grant and his surprise guest artist. Bring your sketch book, bring your dad, Bring a live wild animal! The person with the best live sketch will win a kewl prize. The first 20 guests to show up get a signed limited edition poster!

Crime and Punishment

This summer, acclaimed theater director Aleksey Burago and The Russian Arts Theater and Studio continues its 2015-2016 season with Fyodor Dostoevsky's magnum opus Crime and Punishment. In the hot slums of St. Petersburg lives Raskolnikov, a former student struggling with debt and disillusionment. Believing himself to be a superior man, he soon executes a plan to kill and rob an old pawnbroker, arguing that her money can be used for good deeds, while ridding the world of a worthless parasite. As the growing voice of his conscience sets in, Raskolnikov soon finds the noose of his own guilt tightening around his neck. Join the Russian Arts Theater and Studio as it brings one of the greatest novels to life at the West End Theater and embark upon a journey into the mind of a killer and his search for redemption.

Beginning in August 2016, The Negro Ensemble Company, Inc. will deepen its commitment to discovery, development and presentation of superior theatre with four consecutive weekends of exciting and innovative productions showcasing up-and-coming Black playwrights through the Emerging Playwrights Competition.

The selected plays are: Hurricane House, by Wendell E. Carter and directed by Justin Lord, which features a crisis-stricken Southern family within a house "in the eye of the storm" employing a semi-realist dramatic structure (August 11-14); Hercules Didn't Wade in the Water, by Michael A. Jones and directed by Charles Weldon, depicts the struggle for life and unfulfilled dreams amidst Hurricane Katrina (August 18-21); Swing, by Holly M. Eaton and directed by Jeannine Foster-McKelvia, explores the extreme consequences resulting from an attempt to escape a past that remains current and constant (August 25-28); and Le Blanc, by Brian Wade and directed by Fulton C. Hodges, showcases a non-linear tale of the rags-to-riches-to demise and redemption of a world famous dancer (September 1-4).
Clown! Do Some Ballet!

As part of the Dream Up Festival 2016, the Theater for the New City is pleased to present Clown! Do Some Ballet! An interdisciplinary solo performance piece created, choreographed and performed by Elizabeth Gannon and directed by Ilanna Saltzman, Clown! Do Some Ballet! fuses concepts of dance, ballet, theater and clown performance. The performance tells the story of Clown, a surprisingly empathetic character who is constantly challenged by the pitfalls of everyday life.

Clown! Do Some Ballet! is a one-woman show that follows the character Clown through her daily life in a series of dance vignettes. Clown experiences many emotions, ranging from joy to defeat, happiness to sorrow, and discovers a new way of expression through her dance. The music encompasses a variety of genres, ranging from jazz to pop-dance music. The run time is approximately 22 minutes.

All performances will be held at Cabaret Theater, Theater for the New City, 155 First Avenue. The performances will take place on: August 31st at 6:30 PM; September 4th at 5:00 PM; September 8th at 6:30 PM; September 10th at 2:00 PM; and September 14th at 6:30 PM. Visit for more information.
