The NYC subway system is a great way to get around the city. Gone are the graffiti covered cars of the 70's they have been replaced with modern air conditioned cars. Open 24/7 the subway system is a fairly clean and reliable way to get around manhattan. For $2.00 you can get anywhere in the city- one way. Pick up an all day Metro pass if your doing a lot of sight-seeing. You purchase your card in a machine in the station and insert it in the turnstile thats it your are officially a New Yorker!
Subway Maps:
The subway map is fairly straightforward to read. Lines are either local or express being named by the station or area at the final stop of the car. The lines are color and number coded and the sides and fronts of the trains and stations are clearly marked. You can find a map of the subway from the MTA: www.mta.info
Spend a little time on the map prior to getting on a platform it will save you a lot of headache. The station entrances are clearly marked and fairly easy to locate. Dont be afraid of the subway but use your common sense. Dont stand too close to the platform. Dont stray too far out of an area if you dont know where you are going. Look and walk like you know what you are doing at all times. Dont travel alone late at night. Avoid the public restrooms in the Subways. If you need assistance ask an NYC transit cop or station attendant.
