A quarter of a million New Yorkers answered the call to serve during the Vietnam War. Like fellow veterans around the country, many who returned home encountered extensive animosity, the scapegoats of an unpopular war. This memorial to their bravery and sacrifice recognizes their service and sacrifice, and preserves the names and voices of a generation once lost to controversy but now forever found. The Memorial, dedicated in 1985, includes a Reflecting Fountain, where water flows over light stones set in polished black granite, providing a soothing center for the plaza. At the Memorial Wall, excerpts from 83 letters written by those who served in Southeast Asia are etched in a 70-foot glass block and granite wall. The names of the 1,741 New Yorkers who were killed in Vietnam are listed at the Walk of Honor.
