Founded by the Colonial Dames of America as the Abigail Adams Smith Museum in 1939, the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum was recently renamed to better reflect the building's actual history. In fact, the daughter of our 2nd president never lived here--the building was the sturdy carriage house on the land owned by Adams Smith and her dissolute husband Col. William Smith.
