The site of the Fraunces Tavern Museum was built in 1719 as a private residence, but was converted to a tavern by Samuel Fraunces in 1762. From here President George Washington gave his farewell address to the officers of the Continental Army in 1783. The property was subsequently rented to the government to house the offices of the war, treasury and foreign affairs departments. In 1907, it opened to the public as the Fraunces Tavern Museum, highlighting New York's history, the Revolutionary War and the Early Republic. Today it offers a permanent collection of artifacts, paintings, drawings and documents related to the colonial, revolutionary and early federal periods of American history, with a focus on New York. They also offer frequent evening lectures. The Porterhouse Brewing Company at Fraunces Tavern is an onsite pub-style restaurant.
